U.S. Customs and Border Protection looking to Blockchain

Recent reports show that U.S. Customs and Border Protection has established a working group for exploring new technologies to aid in securing the borders of the country. The working group was established in September to aid the agency, which mainly deals with collecting duties and fighting drug trafficking and terrorism.

On the first day the working group met, the Department of Homeland Security presented and explained various applications of Blockchain, and on the second day the working group identified 14 applications relevant for the agency /2/, including:

• Storing licenses from partnering government agencies
• Keeping track of permits
• Reporting certificates of origin
• Motion tracking
• Reporting on free trade agreement product qualifications

Customs and Border Protection is not the only U.S. government agency exploring Blockchain. A few months ago a commission was created for exploring the use of Blockchain in the election process (more information here), and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also been reported to be searching for Blockchain implementations (read more here). On an international scale, the United Nations has also expressed plans to use Blockchain to fight child trafficking and help distribute assistance to hungry families around the globe /1/.
